What's the story behind this one?

Call me sceptical, but I can't imagine Monteiths producing the "Worlds 5th best beer" and the best NZ beer...?

I'm sure I saw a billboard that claimed 'World's best lager'.

Surely it's not that good.
No, that must have been a Tui billboard. Or is that just one of the ones in my dreams?
I've seen a billboard in Wellington that says that.....I vaguely remember it did well on packaging but i find it hard to believe that a monteiths beer is the fifth best in the world.....unless there were only four other entries and they were Miller lite, Budweiser, Export Gold and Flame.
Just checked it out on ratebeer.com

Not exactly inspiring ratings from the worlds 5th best beer!
Yup , i've just brought a dozen, and it's good! Crisp and clean taste, don't knock it until you try it!
It seems like it was brewed to provide some competition to Steinlager Pure. The beer was decent enough (somewhat similar to Carlsberg I thought), the label slightly disappointing, but the bottle was kinda cute. All in all, I'd probably drink it again I think
Followed up with a few the other night - was pretty disappointed. Saw the following on a different forum, so thought I'd post it - http://wasabi.typepad.com/intro/2008/03/authentic-roots.html which talks about the new Monteiths brand.
Had one tonight, straight from the bottle, didn't spend much time 'analyising' it as such. Seemed like just another green bottle lager to me, not bad but not the best either.
I had my first one last night. Not bad, interesting fruity/bubblegum hops aroma. The best thing was it was free, we won 2 dozen yesterday :)

I still prefer my own brew though...
I was really looking forward to the NZ release of this as I had read plently about how Monteiths were trying to crack into the UK market, so I thought if they could sell it over there, it must be okay. Had one on Friday at the pub. Admittedly, it was my 4th or 5th beer that night, but I was fairly coherent... I must say that I was more than a bit disappointed; it seems that they have made a beer that wont offend anyone and as a result I felt it was a bit bland. Maybe I was just expecting a bit more bite and flavour froma beer that was intended for the UK...?

I agree with Steve about preferring my own brew.
This beer surprisingly won class 5 (not necessarily meaning it is the 5th best beer in the world) of the 2007 International Beer Challenge in the catergory "Lager between 4.3% and 5.5% abv". Have a look.

I notice it doesn't appear in the list of the 50 best beers of 2007, then again I don't think the list contains 50 beers????
