Slight disaster with my Patriot :o( When I poured it into the glass it was like a slurpee, semi frozen... My CAP wort is in the chest freezer crash cooling to 10*c, and its too cold for the PETs.. Lucky all of em werent in the fridge...

By the time it thawed it was pretty flat and thin, however retained a bit of the nice fruity hop aroma and caramel malt flavours! It was pretty quaffable! Nice and clean bro, well fermented!

I had this one last night too.

It's not a bad drop - quite clean. Aroma took a while to put my finger on... but in the end I got there. I assumed that it was very lightly dry hopped... but couldn't pick what hop was giving me what I was getting.

I moved onto the taste and figured out from there that it wasn't dry hopped... so I went back to the smell again. Swirled the crap out of it throughout the whole bottle... and it wasn't till the last 250mls when it clicked in my head. Apricots! Dehydrated apricots! Phew! I'd put that down to a combination of that aroma hop addition of Amarillo and the amount of CaraPils you have in there, James. Good combination.

That flavour was crisp and refreshing all the way through... with some subtle fruits coming through from the hops. I'm picking that if you want to brew this one again, a little bit of CaCl2 and CaSO4 wouldn't go amiss... there was just a hint of astringincy from the grain... probably due to a slightly high mash pH. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

Overall I really liked this beer - it tasted like a lager drinkers version of a Pale Ale. It made it super crisp... and exellently refreshing... very much a summer quaffing beer. If all the breweries in NZ were producing this instead of shit like Export Gold, I'd be buying a hell of a lot more megaswill!

You are right for the rebrew, I have additions for CaCl2 and lactic acid. As I haven't replaced my pH meter yet didn't want to change the water profile too much. CHCH water is 7.8 pH normally.

Drank this one last night followed by "The Yak".

Poured a nice & clear golden color with a short lasting white head.
Aroma of Pils malt, light caramel, bread & sweet fruity US hops. Slight smell of something that is hard to pinpoint but reminding me of stale cigarette butts, not offensive, just there. Taste has a nice balance of dry/bitter/sweetness with a slickness on the tongue and a bready aftertaste. This beer smells hoppier than it tastes. Nice easy drinker.

What would I change? I thought it was maybe lacking a little in the malt backbone of the beer, maybe a different base malt or sub out some base malt for munich? That's just my personal pref though. Nothing wrong with it as is.

Great job James, well brewed. That's a beer I could easily drink a lot of. Well done!

This was the first of my case swap beers that I opened last night. I've been avoiding reading any other comments on any of the beers (other than my own) so as not to pre-judge. Sadly my internet connection was playing up last night so I didn't get to write this up straight away while it was fresh in my mind, but I'll see how I go.

First impressions count and this beer scores well, twice. Great label! Then the pour - gorgeous colour, gorgeous clarity. Absolutely flawless, a really attractive beer. First whiff of aroma made it plain that there were American hops in there - plenty of citrus (grapefruit). A bit of swirling and sniffing elicited some juicy fruit (pineapple) notes. Carbonation level also good.

Malt profile was a little more subdued, and body a little thin. A fraction of astringency at the back of the tongue. However, a very refreshing and drinkable beer that certainly showed off the US hops.

If this was my beer, I'd be looking at maybe upping the CaraPils a bit or mashing a little higher to get a bit more body, but other than that I wouldn't change a thing.

Nice start to my case-swap drinking.

Thanks Martin, and yes the it turned out a little thinner than I wanted. My mash temps were a little lower than anticipated, and probably sparged with a little hotter than I should have or as Joking noted maybe my pH was out.
