Recipe Advice Thread

Thought it might be handy to have a thread for some of the more advanced brewers to give some advice on recipes.

I know what you mean about the 'doing your head in' feeling, it can all be a bit overwhelming when you start out... Good way to overcome this is to watch someone else brew, makes it so much easier being able to see it done, then go back and read and itll all make alot more sense...You should try to get out to Mikes to check out a brew, even if its not for you, it will be an invaluble learning experiance :o)

again, just the standard stuff (again, basing off JackoNZ's gear).

40L pot
thermometer (got yesterday)
chilli bin to make a mash tun (hard to get in winter. apparently they're a summer item)
gas bottle + regulator
gas burner (spied one from bunnings)
some sort of hand pump

thats whats in my mind atm.
and i'm sure i've missed something. :-)

Why would a chillibin be hard to get in winter? Most people brew in the winter anyway ;-)

Use Jokings style mash tun I reacon it would only cost you $70 all up and can brew big and small beers

My next brew will be a Pilsner. I was planning on something simple like this:

Malt:
5kg Bohemian Pilsner Malt

Hops:
60 Motueka (25'ish IBU)
10 Motueka 25g
0 Motueka 25g

Yeast:
Wyeast 2112

I am thinking of adding one more malt of either:
- Melanoidin
- Caraaroma
- Carared

Which would you recommend and how much?

I've never used melanoidin before. What will it bring to the beer? Malty aroma? Any color?
