Hey, so I'm thinking about getting a 2L conical flask off labwarehouse.co.nz for yeast starters, but because I'm a tight student I really don't want to pay half the cost of the flask in shipping. So, does anyone in ChCh want to get something from the Lab warehouse and combine the order and save on shipping?
Probably not, however if you have the washer attached to the fan with glue, then the magnets will stick to the washer without glue meaning you can move them if they are not balanced. My magnets are placed just far enough apart so that the ends of the stir bar are just past the magnets (if that makes sense).
I think I might need stronger magnets. my magnets are 10mm X 3mm. I can get a vortex but it just spins off within 2-3 mins. When its on top of the box and not in the flask it can spin to the highest speed put it in the flask and It just spins off!!
I guesstamate about the thickness of the flask, 2mm of plastic and 1 mm of clearance. With magnets if you double them up does that double there pulling power?
Not sure about that one... I would assume if you double them up it would increase the size of the magnetic field.
Try increasing the distance, by putting a cd cover under the flask. I'm not sure if it will help, however I remember something about magnetic field displacement in a science journal....
