Important lesson learned today - make certain your electronic thermometer is set to degrees C, not degrees F when heating water for the mash. I've tried adding more hot water but suspect that the efficiency will be way down for this brew.

Maybe try a decoction to heat it up.

If your doing BIAB apply heat and stir continuously if your not BIAB ing. switch to it for this brew set up your bag and pour mash into it, you can still save it just call it a protein rest!

Thanks Paul and Scott for the thoughtful suggestions. Both would probably have worked. However I've decided to go ahead with the boil and if it turns out to be very low alcohol  or completely undrinkable brew, I'll chalk it up to experience. I've never attempted a decoction so if I had thought to try it, it would have been a rough introduction.

I have warmed mash successfully to avoid  a few disasters and turned out ok, not so sure about cooling one.... I agree call it a just call it a protein rest!

Well, I managed to get a post boil S.G. of 1052. It's not quite the target for the recipe (1076) but I'll hopefully get a drinkable brew out of it - it's the first brew for my new kegerator so I'm sure it'll taste good to me!
