HI All,
Has anyone got a recipe for DB's "Export Gold" ? I wanta make it via the kit method plus add a bit more malt for flavour and bittering and aromatic hops. Any su I also wanta up the alcohol to around 5-6 %
I have previously used a Black Rock Lager kit before with #20 beer enhancer along with saflager S-23 yeast and a super alpha finishing hop bag. My Alcohol % was 3.5 - 4%. Can anyone give me improvements on this to achieve the above.

I'm not trying to be mean or take the piss.... but try Harringtons Razorback, Hawkesbay Pilsner, Yeastie Boys Digital IPA, Bennetts Strong Lager, Monkey Wizard Lager,Pink Elephant Golden Tusk Special Bitter... the list is really big... and these are just a tiny few of the lighter coloured ales & lagers.

Thanks for the website details. Also thanks for the list of craft beers to try. Only reason why I wanted to make export gold was because that was the beer I drank and thought I would tweek it to my tastes. I certainly WILL try the craft beers you have recomended. Are the recipes for these beers on the same website ?

Mate there are recipes everywhere. This forum under "Homebrewers" then "What are you brewing?" thread literally has hundreds. There have been some very interesting discussion on beers based on kits and comparison to mainstream (and lesser known) beers.
Use some software like Brewsmith or Brewmate (free) to build a recipes then post it to the "What are you brewing?" conversation... if you are ask for honest feedback or suggestions, everyone here is glad to help... you might have to put up with the odd semi-drunken suggestion too.
Also your local homebrew store is an endless (especially verbally) source of information... it really dosn't hurt too much to have them bend yer ear.

It's actually more difficult as a homebrewer to duplicate the taste of a mega brewed lager like Export Gold than it is to brew a nice pale ale or German style pilsner. The advantage of being a homebrewer is that you don't need to skimp on ingredients as the per-litre cost of of beer is pretty cheap, whereas for a big industrial brewery they're trying to shave every cent off production costs to keep their profit margins up.
Here's a classic recipe that a lot of people make as their intro to brewing- nice drop too.
Take a German lager recipe, feed it to an accountant.
Cut the grain bill into quarters, add dextrose.
Cut the hops by quarters.
Let your yeast run rampant so you can make beer faster.
Spend 98 of your brewing budget on bill-boards and really thick giggly promo girls.

Use bread yeast and age for a bit longer I pitched 12g into a 20L batch. This might sound a bit left field however I made an all grain blonde Ale that tastes very commercial after about 6 weeks.

Here's my 2C.
You could try something like this.
It won't really taste like DB Export, but...
It'll be pale, have a little European hop character with a little more bitterness and around 5.9% ABV.
Pilsner extract isn't really available in NZ so have used pale malt extract instead.
1 x 1.7kg Pilsner kit (any type)
1 x 1.5kg Pale Liquid Malt Extract (e.g. Black Rock)
500g Dry Malt Extract
200g Plain table sugar, dextrose or honey
Bring 1.5L water to boil
Add 20g Hallertau hop pellets and boil for 10min
Add 20g Hallertau hop pellets and cool in a water bath
Strain into fermeter to remove the hop pellets
Top up to 21L with water to achieve a temp of 15C
US-05 yeast fermenter for two weeks at 15-18C
Optional dry hopping for a fresh hop aroma in the beer (unlike DB Export but nice)
Add 30g Hallertau hop pellets directly to the fermenter after the first week of fermentation.

One question you might be able to answer for me. In general how do you know when to use two yeast sachets instead on one. Is it dependant of the OG crossing a certain threshold ? Im looking at using a lager kit, light hopped dried spray malt, mini mashing some grains as well as steeping some. I would be using Saflager S-23 but am unsure of how far I can stretch it.
