As the title says.... Ive just built a hopback, and Im wondering if there is any need now for the 0 minute additions? Or can I just add these in the hopback an get my wort pumping through as soon as the flame is off?

Ive done a few test runs and it seems to pick up most of the trub quite efficiently, plus whirpooling never worked for me when trying to clear the trub anyway, I think Id rather cool it straight away.

Any thoughts?

on my last brew; to get the trub from the botom of my kettle, i simply pumped from the bottom and sieved as i was cooling so effectively doing 2 jobs at the same time. this was worked well. next time i was thinking of putting cone hops in the sieve like a hop back? this would in my view be like a late hop edition.

I just went ahead and did a brew last weekend and just added all my 0 minute additions into the hop back, instead of directly into the kettle. I guess this is how its usually done?Thats really my question, is a hopback intended for yet even more hops to be added? or is it intended for your 0 minute additions?

The hop back has a nylon bag in it filled with hops and tied aorund a copper inlet tube. The hopback fills faster than it drains so I just adjust the flow so its nealry full through out the process

Through a cfc and straight into the fermentor.... smells pretty good so far

"is a hopback intended for yet even more hops to be added? or is it intended for your 0 minute additions?"

Either or both ;o) You will get slightly different aroma characteristics using a hop back, so if you were brewing a hardcore hoppy IPA, you may want to go for that extra depth of a 0 min and a hop back addition...

Your hopback inlet and outlet are around the wrong way bro - you should get much better extraction if you fill it from the bottom and have it overflow through the outlet... Unless the tin can't handle the pressure, and leaks out the lid of course...
^ thats an easy fix, just flip it upside down lol

Ahh is that how its supposed to flow. The lid is pretty much useless, it blows off if you fill it too much, so I have it open.

I do have a bent piece of copper inside that points downwards and into the bag of hops, although I guess a lot of wort will pass before it has time to extract. The outlet is much smaller however so the can does fill up fast.

I plan on making a new one soon using a 3 litre stainless thermos flask... I just got a head of myself and knocked something together because I had finished the cfc

However you do it - it doesn't really matter so long as the hops are submurged fully in the wort... I think there is supposed to be less channeling if you go from the bottom up. But I could be wrong!
