Where is the best place to source Maris Otter malt, Cascade & Centenial hops, in or around Christchurch?
Also how much difference is there between NZCascade and imported Cascade?
As far as I'm aware, no where. You might be lucky with the Twisted Hop if they're doing a seasonal APA or something for hops, as for malt I'm pretty sure they use NZ pale now. Wigram don't use it either. Otherwise you'll have to get it all in from out of town. I'd love to try brew a few beers with Marris Otter and see the difference... I'd also love to see a decent homebrew store ala Brewers Co-op or even the Dunedin Malthouse for brewing, but it seems like the ChCh places are more interested in Spirits, Wine & kit beer :(
Hops from craftbrewer undoubtedly or an offshore location...The local HBS hops appear to have been packaged a looooooooong time ago and are sitting in faded yellowed boxes on a hot sunny shelf...
I might consider getting some malt shipped down if the CChurch boys takeup was there to split some out...
Mike from Brewers Co-op quoted me $56 in shipping for up to 4 bags end of last year. I have his April pricelist, with MO at $3.16 kg (but he said his malt prices were going up). So about $79 per bag + between $56 & $14 per bag in shipping. Not exactly cheap compared with NZ pale @ $1.66 kg... :(
Maybe we could get one of the breweries down here to chuck in a couple of bags in an order if possible?
So thats 100kg of malt between what, four or five of us? I'd take some, ged, james, crabbey and you? Rusty maybe? If everyone else is keen and we can round some more ppl up then I'm in!
