What am I brewing?

Well, after some frantic organisation and a short notice, fleeting trip to Auckland I managed to spend Monday brewing
Torsion (Coconut Porter) at Hallertau Brewbar.

What an awesome day. Steve and Vince were driving the brew day with me 'assisting' and soaking up the experience.
JoKing was helping out also and provided the majority of the day's entertainment. Steve was so generous with his knowledge, experience, food & beer that I felt like I was stealing from him. The brewing experience was fantastic and I have come away with several ideas on how to improve my beers and speed up my brew day. At the and of the brew day I got to sample all of the Hallertau beers that were on offer at the bar along with a few 'special' beers from 'out back', some of which were truely memorable.

A totally awesome day and a totally awesome prize from the NHC.

It'll be hard to top that as far as beer events are concerned.
I was waiting to hear about your day mate! I was out there on Tuesday and Steve told me you'd been up the day before. Glad it went well.

Let's hope that Steve decides to brew the other joint-champion beer sometime!
Sounds like you had as much of a good time as I did last year. Any talk of a Coconoir?
I can confirm that there will DEFINITELY NOT be a Coconoir.

Should be ready in 6-8 weeks I think. Steve will be controlling all of that though so we have to wait & see. Can't wait!
Just crushed the grist for tomorrow - Mk II Single Hop PA.

20L, 1.052, 46IBU, 67C Mash, 7 SRM

4.50kg NZ pale malt
0.20kg Pale crystal
0.10kg Amber malt

Columbus all the way through

11g @ 60
30g @ 15
30g @ 0
30g dry hop

1764 Pacman

Sorry Jo, respect for the advice on the grist but had to go with my (beer) gut feeling on this one, haha will probably regret it ;-)
What's NZ Pale malt - is that Gladfeilds ?

Was Jo tempting you to go higher on the pale Crystal - I'd be tempted too myself, perhaps - but we'd be brewing different beers

Ah nah, NZ pils/Malteurop/asian-writing-on-the-bag stuff.

Jo said drop the amber and go to like 7-8% melanoidin.

Current APA has 200g pale and 100g medium crystal, I'm swapping out the medium with amber to hopefully get a bit of crunchy-toastiness in there. I think the level of 'maltiness' is OK, hence not going with the melanoidin. Whether or not it will carry the columbus will be a different story.
Ah, ok. I always think pale = ale malt

If it doesn't carry the Columbus, then you've got one big hop sucker onya hands
reckon the amber will be good though. Nice malt, haven't used it for awhile, might have to try it again soon. Adds a good non-cara/crystal dimension that isn't there often enough
