I'm looking to buy a stainless steel keg to convert to a kettle. What can I expect to pay? There was a beautifully made kettle and mash tun on Trademe a week ago but they sold for about $700. That's a lot of beer.

Far out $700 is excessive!!

Any reason you are looking for a keg for a kettle as opposed to an actual pot? Kegs come up on trademe from time to time but vary in price, stainless steel pots are also on trademe from time to time and again vary in price but IMO, get a pot instead of a keg, they are thinner so you dont need to spend so much energy getting the beer to the boil, and on top of that youre not going to be restricted to 50L
Do they make pots of 40+ litre capacity? I use a 4 ring gas burner which pumps out a lot of heat so would a pot be up to it?
Absolutely mate, I recently acquired an 85L kettle and am in the process of getting the other bits and pieces I need so that I can brew double or triple batches!! One of the things I need is a decent burner, and yes the pot will definately be up to it, you may find youll have to turn a couple of rings down to stop it boiling like mad, but thats easily done...

Id suggest go for bigger rather than smaller, reason being is there is usually only $20-$30 difference between say a 40L and a 70L, if you get a bigger one now, when you want to upgrade you wont need to shell out for another kettle, I started out with a 30L and regretted it after only a few weeks!
100% agree with Rev, I have a 36L pot and it's too small so have just bought a 68L.
Did you buy that new pot off trademe Dale? I've been looking at getting some of this trader "maxch7788"
Heres a cheaper keg kettle setup but you get what you pay for that $700 setup was mint!

Going up to Auckland soon, where can I buy one of these pots?

Hi this is where I got my Keg - http://www.kegresources.co.nz/ cost $105 if I recall right. They also would cut top for a little extra. I did it myself and found that - $1 reserve 34CM Heavy Duty Non Stick Wok - from familywarehouse888@yahoo.co.nz on trade me is the perfect size for a lid.
