I've been speaking to Mike of Brewers Coop about him stocking Melanoiden Malt. He'll do it as long as there is enough demand. From speaking to a few people and following threads on the forum there does seem to a number of brewers using or who would use it if was readily available.

I understand that German Melanoiden is interchangable with Belgian Aromatic.

So what's the word, would you be interested in it, and if so how much? I'd get 3kg.

I said to Mike that I'd start a thread and then let him know what the demand was like.

Depending on the response there could be a wider opportunity here to source a greater variety of Malts. Brewers Coop have added quite a few specialty malts over the last year, but there's still others I'd like to see there - i.e Belgian Special B

By the way, and just to be clear, I'm not offering to do a bulk order and distribute etc. All orders would need to be placed directly with Brewers Coop, to which (despite appearances) I have no commercial interest lol .

"...In practice the EBC color is approximately 1.97 times the SRM color. (EBC = 1.97 * SRM)..."

1.97 * 40.64 = 80.06EBC and 1.97 * 50.8 = 100.08EBC so back to the same numbers?

Am I still missing something?
No - the conversion is different to the figures Weyerman are using!
I know but it also states that in practice SRM = L
Ahhh yeah, appears Weyermann use the old conversion.

So I guess that the EBC is what they actually measure in seeing as they're in Europe? So that's the one to use.
Sounds like the go.

Caramunich is good stuff anyway - very much flexible to use in a great many styles of beer.
Cool.

I know it sounds a little over the top I just like being as accurate and careful as possible, makes it a little easier when I have problems.
I'll let Brewers Coop know that there's a solid but hardly overwhelming demand for Melanoiden. Hopefully he can be persuaded to stock a sack.

I also see Liberty are getting it in. That's brilliant! As has been written elsewhere I'll support the local as much as possible (Brewers Coop) because he's local, gives great service and there's no shipment.

Thank's for the info on substitutions, that certainly helps.
Agree totally. Jamil is a god among men, but he is extremely biased when it comes to malt, and I often wonder just how he can possibly have tried every malt on the planet to make some of the statements he comes out with.

That said, research is a tricky thing with malt. There is a lot of misinformation, disinformation, complete speculation, and downright lies and mythology out there with respect to malts. Because actually brewing with all of them is a time consuming and expensive proposition, we need a source of good information. Any suggestions on a good, unbiased source?
So did Mike end up getting Melanoiden?
Not sure but Liberty has it. It only comes in 50kg bags, at present, so it is a bit to take on if you are only selling a little bit here and there.
Yes, I'm not sure either. I think the 50kg bag is a bit of a barrier.
Not to me. I'll use it, so others have the opportunity to also.
