So I'm in placemakers waiting for keys to be cut & browsing with an eye for brewing applicable hardware and I notice the "Filter sleeve" at $4.78 a linear metre. A synthetic weave that looks perfect for hop bags or suspended hop sock. And good price. Will get some and try it.

Apparently ladies pantihose make for good hop socks as well...

Just saying...

Yes. I don't have a surplus of those.

whats the thing intended to be used for?

The idea is that if you dont want to have to strain the hops out or if you want to remove them while cooling the wort, you put them in a hop bag and tie up. There is a question of whether they are allowed enough movement to be effective & if you are doing several additions you need more bags or a resealable one.

I made myself a hop sock which stays open above the wort & is suspended on a large split ring, so I can just chuck each addition in the top. But to be honest I haven't bothered lately. Siphoning into a bottling bucket and leaving in fridge until at pitching temp lets any hop matter settle.

nah i meant what do people buy the filters for from placemakers? nova pipe?

Ha ha, sorry. Yes for going around pipe. Keeps roots out I think.

just to jump on the band wagon has anybody tried the resealbale tea bags from ebay for hop additions?

would these be of any use or are they too small to let the hoppy goodness out?

Or these

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Creative-2-5-Inch-Reusable-Stainless-Steel-... you can get 3" ones aswell but this is what I came up with after 2 miutes of searching. At less that NZ$2.50 each you could get a few for each of your additions.

I did have a look at those as well but wasn't sure the mesh would be fine enough, gotta love chinese cheap stuff on ebay,

do you reckon the mesh would keep pellet hops contained well enough?

I saw this thread with a guy that used a similar one (a 5" tea ball) as a cheap hop stopper with good results with leaf hops. A few people on that thread said they had used them as hop balls (as in their "normal" use) with good/ok results with pellets, but one said no dice. I might just go check how maxed out the visa is now...

Just bought 3 of the 2.5" tea balls, I'll let you guys know how they go in 10 - 20business days!

do let us know how they go as I am keen to get some if they work,

cheers
