If you ferment US05 low you get sulphur and diacetyl! I've used it a few times now and am quite surprised how well it performs against a true lager strain.

I am storing it under the house, so I hope to keep it down to below 17 deg. Unfortunately I don't have any form of temperature control ( apart from a heat pad), so I am at the mercy of the elements and how cool I can store it.
I havent tried the cali lager strain for my own brewing, but ive tasted beers that were fermented with it at warm temps, but IMO I didnt really like it all that much, I definately prefer a cool S-05 ferment over a 2112 beer...
If you can get temp control tho, or some kind of cooling (TM for cheap fridges, I used to brew lagers with the fridge set on 1, so no need for a tempmate, cost me $20 and lasted 12 months!!) I would seriously highly reccommend Wyeast 2124 or the dried equivalent! It is truely an awesome yeast, so damn clean and crisp! Yum!! Just make sure you do a big enough starter ;o)
James - in case you cant tell your Pilsner last night has got me hankering for more lagers!! :o) My lager fridge gave up the ghost the other week tho so im also on the lookout for something new... So keen to get a lager fermenting, cos I know its allready too late for summer :o(
