Hey, so I'm thinking about getting a 2L conical flask off labwarehouse.co.nz for yeast starters, but because I'm a tight student I really don't want to pay half the cost of the flask in shipping. So, does anyone in ChCh want to get something from the Lab warehouse and combine the order and save on shipping?

Same thing here, except about 3mm thick. This is the fan set up on my
stirbox.... You can go nuts with trying to get the magnetic stirbar working a vortex properly!
What did you use for the power supply to convert it to 12v?
I'm running a 9V cellphone charger, so in theory will only get 75% of the power to the fan... or 3/4 of the RPM rating. I have yet to upgrade to a 12V, however if I did that the potentiometer takes care of the rest.
I bought a $20 240 to 12v transformer as I didn't want to shag any of the ones we use for phone charging etc...At full pelt on the potentiometer which is around 12v, the fan spins too fast, creates too much pressure in the vortex pushing down on the bar and the bar spins out ...I remember reading a technical term for this effect with vortex's whilst examining build plans.
I used an 80mm fan as the biggest jiffy box i could find was too small for 120mm. I have no room left, so was thinking about buying a tool box that I could fit my flask into with some padding and storage for all my breakable brewing tools. Then wiring the fan etc into that... and a tool box is less than $20.

Something like this: Toolbox stirplate
Sweeeeet
Cheers Guys for all this, I got a 120mm fan and all that bits from Jaycar, turns out Jaycar was just up the road from me!! Has any of you guys got a copy of a wiring diagram for the system, it is all the same even down to the pot! got it off trade me from the same dude!

Hopefully you can follow it, otherwise will have to make a movie or something! :)
Cheers for the James!! Hopefully my Pot turns up today so I can get it underway. I have a big 1.100 Imp smoked porter for monday so hopefully I can use the stirplate to culture up some Wyeast 1968!!
Struggling to keep my stir bar in place it keeps spinning out is it because the magnets are out of balance? or is there some magical trick to get this working
Make sure your magnets are on the washer like HerrSchnapps picture below. You will need to start your magnet spinning slowly and up the speed little by little.

It takes me a good 2 or 3 minutes to get up to speed.
Why does it need to be on the washer?
