I have just purchased a magnetic drive pump, at this stage it will recirculate hot wart through a counterflow chiller (and may be filter) back to the kettle. So far I have been using some hardware store vinal hose and thought It might be time to upgrade to something a tad more food grade. I was thinking about This stuff but it says not for pressure, not that there is much pressure in the system but is it the appropriate thing or do you guys know of something better?

Hi Cain, I've been using that tubing for recirculating during mashing and boiling with no issues to date.  I believe the tube is rated to 15psi (or ~10m head) & 500F (260c) however I doubt that is concurrent.  I believe my pump has a maximum rated head of 2.5m, so even dead heading the pump does not create issues.  Be sure to ask about a discount for a few meters of tubing, I think I got 8m for an even $100 cash. Cheers

Karl sells this one but its not transparent, and its more $$

$20 a m,  I haven't decided which way to jump yet, got my disconnects.

I use this through out my setup and can't fault it, other than the transparency issue but that s not a major issue for me

That seller has cheap disconnects too (and other stuff), and will consolidate shipping for you. I've found them good to deal with.

Yeah I've also bought alot of stuff from this seller and have had no issues at all.

Don't suppose anyone has had any luck getting decent high-temp hose to fit 3/4in fittings? That's what we're running int he brewery and I really don't want to have to step it down and restrict flow. Currently using 20mm vinyl tubing, but not transferring anything above 80C - so maybe I'm okay sticking with that? I've never had an off flavour in the beer from it, only reason I'm looking at hoses is because it does tend to flatten out as it gets hot and would prefer not to have that happening.

I have been using spring flex hose from 'The Hose Shop' in Avondale   you can see it on their website here   http://www.hoseshop.co.nz/newsite/our-products

I pump the 100C wort through my plate chiller and on to my fermenter with this 1/2" tubing.  It is cheaper than the silicon hose and does not kink or bulge.  A friend uses the 3/4" version, again with no issues with heat or pressure.  (I have silicon tubing and substituted it out for this better spring flex hose)

did you end up getting that pump from keg king Cian? how much did you land it for? as opposed to the tempercon polyprop ones on TM that kid king one is polysolfone (same as march) and has threaded half inch fittings. looks like a good cheap unit

It was $NZ 117 landed which is pretty cheap. I got mine off ebay but see the seller hasn't got any more there but do on their web site. Yeah 1/2 inch fittings out up and in strait out the front like tempercon. I would have preferred left and right like some of the march pumps but spent $25 at plumbing world (wrangled a discount) and got 1/2' elbow + 1/2' to 20mm (or is it 18mm - whatever my garden hose fittings are) connector for inlet  and some kind of hot water tap for outlet that has 1/2' one end 20mm the other, a ball valve in the middle and an bend just a bit wider than 90 degrees so now it goes left and right and has garden hose connecters, all solid brass (no plastic or hose clamps).

I had a quick test with pump on ground next to my mash tun with just a little water (so no head and pumping up hill) in it and got a flow rate of about 3L/min through counter flow and not much more when I disconnected everything from the outlet and had it blasting strait on to the deck which is a long way short of the 19L/min max that its advertised at.

Brewing on the weekend so will post on how it goes. If I get a consistent 3L/min I would be happy enough, I figure 10min recirculating to kettle through counter flow gets me an evenly cooled luke warm 40L brew (cold enough to preserve flame out hop editions), then another 10min (hoping for slightly faster flow down hill) to fermenter via counter flow and it will be stone cold. If you are interested in one I would suggest waiting for my report on how it preforms on brew day, given the difference between advertised and observed flow rates and if I forget to post feel free to remind me.

So using it in  real brew I got a flow rate I recon of about 4L per min. Had problems with a seal sucking in air which caused problems with the pump but that's to be expected with a magnetic drive and was fixed with tighten of the offending join and a problem with a blockage elsewhere.
