The national beer comps are being held in Dunedin this year and I'm keen to spend a few days scouting out the local breweries and brewers.

Anyone else going and or in the area keen for a few days emptying bottles?

I'll have to find the dates but I thought it was September or somewhere around there...

Hey Liam,

Is there a link to some info on these national beer comps? I'm only aware of the SOBA NHC (which is being held once again in Hamilton this year - details to follow). SOBA began the NHC after other comps died out, the last of which was the tri-nations as far as I knew.

I'd be interested in working with whoever organises this comp you're talking about to have One Competition to Rule Them All! ;)

Not that SOBA has any issue with there being other competitions, just that it's a massive task to organise the 400+ entries we get each year, and duplication of that labour seems wasteful.

Cheers,

Greig.

Hi Greg,
The competition Liam is talking about is the National Amatuer Winemakers and Brewers competition and is open to all members of affiliated clubs. It has been running for at least 20 years. We hosted it in Auckland 3 years ago and had just under 2000 entries at that time.

The competition rules are controlled by the National Federation and they adopted the BJCP styles 3 years ago for future competitions.

Ah, thanks Bryan.

Thanks Bryan

Its a really good even and couple of nights tasting, well worth it!

Is there a list of clubs and contacts? I couldn't find a website. I'm starting all grain (tomorrow!) and am looking for some contacts!

Cheers,

Dene

Cool, sounds like a good time! Would be great to have a few more details. We have a small but consistent group of brewers down here and seems to be an increasing number of all-grain brewers in Dunedin. I might be keen to host a small get together / tasting at my brewery if there are excess beer geeks around the place

I'll get the details from beer club and post it up.  I'd be keen for catch up with a group of local brewers for sure!
