BIAB vessel

So im about to purchase a Crown hot water urn from craftbrewer to start my adventures into all grain brewing, doing BIAB styles. Does anyone else use one of these for BIAB and do they do the trick all good? Or should i be looking at getting me a big ass gas burner and pot or something? Thanks

$260 Aust plus freight seems a lot, you could probably put together a kettle and element for a lot less locally. Check out Petes in Porirua for large pots (unless Chris has bought them all :-)

Yeah i guess so, but gas burners are expensive themselves, and the prices for pots are crazy!. Plus i don't even have a gas bottle, regulator etc. I can't get the urn till next week now anyways so i'll have a look around to see how much i could rig up a cheaper system. But if im not saving a hell of alot i'll just go for the urn. I'll be sure to check out that Petes I'll give em a ring. Im guessing a 40 litre or or so will do.. Cheers pal

Pop a 2kw element in a 40 or 50 litre cheapie. Heat your water in another cheapie on the stove and you're away

I think you will be happy with an URN. You can even brew in your kitchen, leaving the mess for your partner to clean up. :>

Hahahaha dont know if id get away with that...still weighing up the pros and cons of both. Which is a bit whack cos as i made this thread i was literally just about to purchase the Urn! haha

Brewing inside is great, but you still need good ventilation, there's a lot of steam generated.
It really pissed the family off when I used to do a partial boil on the stove in the kitchen

Haha, nah i got a decent sized garage and the ventiliation in there would be all good. Just went to Mitre ten to check out gas burners, they got a massive 4 ring one for $149 and 3 ring ones for $69. A 4 ring burner and a 45 litre pot and im looking at probly the same price or more than the Urn. Decisions...decisions.

Electric urn would be nice tho...

True. Id be saving about $100 or so if i went for the 3 ring pot setup. Which for that reason i might just have to go for.

There's some jokers at save barn in aucks that sell catering equipment -sell stuff through trade me. I've bought stuff from them 50L ss pot, Pasta makers. Its all made in china- pretty cheap but does the job. might be worth a look they have urn on a $1 reserve!. I can't see why an urn wouldn't work for biab imho. from what i understand you can get away with a 2.4kw element for small boils ie 20l but for 40L you really need more power like 4 or 5kwatts.

I'm starting to get into BIAb and plan to use a couple of 2.3kw immersion elements with a 50L pot. They sell em at the local electrical wholesalers to the dairy farmers to warm up the milk for their calves.
