Hey guys, im piecing together a Belgian Rye recipe which is gonna be my next brew after another Pale Ale, but im not really sure about the hopping cos I never do Belgians :o( I know theyre not supposed to be very bitter, so what sort of IBU/OG ratio would I be looking at here? What hops are good? Ive got some Super Alpha??

This is what im considering for my grist, would love some feedback on it also :o) pretty simple really..

4kg NZ Pils
2kg Rye
500g-1kg Munich??? Not sure how much
500g Brown Sugar
Wyeast 3787
Beer recipator gives me a rough OG of about 1079?? But that may be wrong cos its pretty shit (but free) online software

Had one of doublehoppy's Tripels last night, it was amazing, aroma of bubblegum, banana, pepper, so complex, hard to finish the whole 750ml bottle tho :oP lol
Thanks for the positive feedback fellas.

Reviled, you had the pick of the crop BTW. That one won a gold in the SOBA comp in 2007. I never had any problem finishing a 750ml bottle haha. Seriously, I'll now only use 330ml bottles for the strong 'uns.

Joking, I bottled that Hefeweizen that I did based on your recipe (in the "what are you brewing thread") tastes damn fine IMO. I think this will be for the crate swap.
lol dont get me wrong, im not normally a drinker of strong Belgians, which is why I struggled through it near the end ;oP I did the same thing with my Bourbon Porter, stupidly bottled half the batch in 1.25 litre bottles :o( Can never finish a whole one..
This is good news indeed. I will move heaven and earth to get a taste of that Weizen. I'm in the land of the A for another 2 nights. Doublehoppy, will you be able to make it to Hallertau tomorrow mate? We are meeting at 4pm - Tony... if you read this in time, feel free to come along too.
Sweet cheers guys.
I doubt I'll be able to get there unfortunately - fambly stuff. I'll do my best to get there, I owe you a bottle for your advice

Otherwise you might just have to join the case swap!?
Ok, heres my updated recipe... OG 1087 IBU's 40

4kg NZ Pils
2kg Rye
800g Munich
150g CaraMunich
150g Cara-Aroma
500g Brown Sugar
60 : 30g Super Alpha
20 : 20g Styrian
FO : 15g Styrian
3787

Now, should I dry hop this a little? Or not to style? I reckon maybe some dry styrians would work well with the phenols but im not sure?? What do you guys think?
Anything goes with Belgian beer, mate.

You just need to find a hop that will work well with the Belgian aromatics. Amarillo or Simcoe would be nice...;op!
Wanna sell me some? :o)
of which?
Amarillo or Simcoe, 100gms would last me ages :o)

Pretty please...
I'll check my stocks when I get home - I'm sure I might have enough Amarillo to spare.

But don't hold me to it - I'm like a massive hoarder when it comes to hops!
