I had an awesome beer weekend concluding in a brew session with Mike Neilson and Reviled here in New Plymouth. Great Beer, Great Company and Great Brewing!!!
We brewed:
Mikes Maniacally Mad Mixture of Malted Meal Featuring the 4 C Hops...
OG: 1095
FG: 1.018ish
ABV: 10.2%
IBU: 120ish
4.16kg Maris Otter
4.16kg Light Munich
1kg Good old fashioned plain white table sugar.
250g CaraAroma
250g Pale Chocolate Malt
220g Light British Crystal
170g CaraMunich II
170g Melanoidin Malt
Reviled took heaps of photos - so if you're lucky he might blog it out from his point of view... Mike said he "would" but in his words... "I'm a bit computer Illiterate".
It was a fun time brewing it with the boys! We all built a bit of a sweat up brewing it... there was so much going on. We reduced the first 5 litres that came out of the mash tun down to one. It was as thick as maltexo.
We battled for quite a while to get to the top - but the weather got the best of us... as did our hangovers. We made it to about 1800 and the summit is 2600. Still... the thought was there, and beer was the winner on the day.
Thanks heaps to Mike for formulating such a retarded recipe, and bringing all his ingredients up here. It sure put the JoKing Brewery to the test... but she passed with flying colours. We worked out that we could have fit 12 kilos of grains in the Mash tun with a LGR of 2.2:1
Going to try my hand again at an IIPA but with a NZ twist the grist is going to be all over the show and is not realy to an IIPA style by using Pils malt (to cheap to buy some UK Pale). But im going to try and Fatten it up with Munich and Melanoidin. And after drinking JoKings Experiwheat im going to chuck in some wheat to see if I can replicate that lemon zest twang from it. I have chucked in some Caramalt to sweaten it up!! just a touch.
1075's a bit low for you Mike? ;o) Looks like a damn good recipe, shit loads of late hops, itll definately be a nice hop slap in the face... I cant say ive ever dry hopped with Sauvin, should be interesting!
Sorry cant help you on the Motueka tho - Brewing with it the 1st time this weekend too...
Yeah I know but I think the last IIPA was a bit to strong @ 11% Pliny was 8% and Ruination around about the same and to me those beers were more drinkable than the other 2 and mine as they were both higher in alc. Im Hopping less is more!!
Fair enough, I note youre also gunning for a more 'malty' beer with all that melanoidin, something well balanced and still malt focussed like Pliny? Or is that just to compensate for the ADM?
And yeah, 11% is never gonna be a quaffer ;oP Not for me at least haha
Bit of bothrealy ADM is pretty boring I find and I found Pliny to be light yet Caramely I was going to do a 60/40 With UK PAle and Pils with 4% Caramalt but im to tight to buy it at this stage, exspecialy as I dont know what Im going to get out of these NZ Hops.
I've used Motueka a couple of times. If you want to get a reasonable idea of the contribution it will make, buy a bottle of Sassy Red. It is a pleasantly spicy slightly citrussy character... like lemon pepper, with lime maybe? Not towards the orange or grapefruit end of citrus. Like Saaz spice mixed with lemon and lime.
