Yea, I like it as a bittering hop, tasted it in numerous beers over time and enjoyed that small contribution. Also in a few brews lately as a bittering hop.
Past that I don't think it's a goer, often anyway, for me, as a later hop
This sounds like a good excuse for the first North Welly tasting of 2011 Matthew
Gonna brew my West Coast Blonde with Amarillo instead of Simcoe some time today.

Them hops are getting harder to source - the US craft beer explosion has made availability for the sought after varieties quite difficult. I got a wee bit of Simcoe left from the '09 harvest which I could use... but I'm keeping it for you fella's.

Pretty soon we'll have a WHOLE swag of fresh harvest in stock.
Fark ive been a bit worried lately Jo whenever I bring up your website, but glad youve got some fresh stock coming in :o)
using simcoe and centennial A LOT at the moment. Love that combo.
We store it all under vaccuum seal and at -24 degrees, so freshness is never a problem.... but availability? That's a whole other beast!
Sorry Jo, I wasnt really getting at the freshness being an issue, more the availability of some of my fave hops!!

Sometimes it sucks to be such a whore for the US stuff, but I dont care ;o)
Brewing an Irish Red today. Midweek brewing makes me very happy.
Got a recipe Richard??
Sure thing. My second iteration of this recipe, the first was a bit overly toasty, and too roasty-burnt, so I've traded my roast barley for pale choc to see if I like that better, and fiddled with the water a bit. Also upped the hops a bit to balance the beer a bit better. May up them further. 29L batch.

I was actually just looking at the recipe and tasting the wort, and I think I've really made a brown ale :) Oh well, tasty anyway.
