Hey there,

This topic probably get thrashed to death, but i have been listening to the Brewing network radio show from the states and they always talk about StarSan. Do we have an equivalent available in NZ? Its an Acid Based no-rinse sanatiser...anyone know of any and where to get it from?

Cheers

Youll have to get it from an Aussie home brew shop mate, Try Ross at Craft Brewer over in Qld
Does Mike at Brewers Coop not stock it? I forgot to ask him last time I made an order
You can also use iodophor, just search for it on here.
I contacted the company that makes the StarSan product and they said that Brewcraft were in the process of importing it. Might be worth contacting Brewcraft and seeing if/when they are likely to get it.

The primary component in StarSan is phosphoric acid and this is also used in some sanitising products used in the dairy industry. I found the following websites on my searches, but didn't get round to determining whether the products offered by these companies would be appropriate for use in homebrewing as no-rinse sanitising products:
http://www.donaghys.com/dairydetergents.html
http://www.rd1.com/web/main
http://supernova.deosan.co.nz/

Other than that it will be a case of importing some StarSan from:
http://www.craftbrewer.com.au/
or somewhere in the USA.

Let us know how you get on.
optimum II made by ecolab could be worth a try
try proxitane, if you can find it.
In my search for a Bar Keeper's Friend alternative I came across quite a few cleaning supply companies that had phosphoric acid based sanitisers, whether or not they would be suitable I wouldn't know but I've been meaning to look into it.

And unrelated but for anyone looking for BarKeeper'sFriend you can buy oxalic acid (the active ingredient in BKF) from Place Makers. It's in the paint section being sold as timber bleach, it's a white powder in a medium sized zip-lock back with a sticker on the front.
I'm pretty sure that Mike (of Brewers Coop) mentioned at the last Auckland Guild meeting that he is now stocking StarSan.
