I'm going to make a special bitter. Very simple numbers.

89% Base Malt
11% Crystal (40L) malt

What I'd like to know is, out of the two, what is the better base malt for a special bitter?

I'd buy both, but a bit cash strapped at the moment. I'm also trying to take into consideration that I'll be making a mild too. Just going to concentrate on the two for the next couple of months to get the recipe right and get the new equipment values.

Cheers

Each of these malts are very good, and will suit an 8B and also a Mild. I like both of them.

Maris Otter will probably give you a little more bready character than Golden Promise.
Golden Promise is a lovely malt, a little sweeter and lighter than Maris Otter.
Golden Promise will allow any specialty malts to shine out somewhat more, Maris Otter can tend to dominate.

I've also made some lovely APAs with Golden Promise, and I think it is more suited to a wider range beyond just English styles.

The choice is yours.
I'd go for Maris Otter in this recipe. It's what most English breweries use.

If you're intersted, I can sell you half a sack of Maris Otter and half a sack of Golden Promise for the regular sack price.

Cheers.
Done.

Is it ok to order it for the 22nd? Pay day :o)
