Alcohol is harmful, causes cancer and kills tons of people. So does smoking. Ergo, alcohol advertising, in-store displays & discounting should follow the smoking model--which is socially accepted--and be banned.
I was going to expand a little on the pointlessness of banning things. It *seems* like the right answer. When you see something you don't like, or you perceive to be harmful, why not ban it? I was going to... then I remembered someone had done it for me, and very eloquently too. It took me a while to remember where, and when, but yay for google.
Fuuckkk. I was all ready to play devils advocate on this, but I've lost heart. I just can't bring myself to argue it... you bastard! ;)
This quote from Susan sums it up perfectly I think:
"More of what patently isn't working, ie, "let's ban drugs in the hope that people won't take them!"
We can't even keep drugs out of jails, for goodness sake."
