Around $500 all up

  • Rims tube is the 2 inch one form Apex home brew on Ali express - also came with 2x 1 1/2 inch tri clamp to hose barb fittings which I made hoses with and put quick disconnects on the other end.
  • 2 inch tri clamp to 1/2 inch npt  also Apex home brew on Ali express
  • PT100 probe with 1/2 inch npt thread other seller on Ali express
  • 2 inch tri clamp to 1 1/4 inch bsp (for NZ element) other seller on Ali express
  • 3000w hermetic LWD element and other assorted electrical bits corys electrical
  • REX-C100 PID (SSR output model) and other assorted electrical bits other sellers on Ali express

I could be more specific about Ali express sellers if someone needs the info

I decided to go with the NZ standard 1 1/4 inch bsp element as I was having trouble finding a 1 inch NPS (American standard) one that was LWD, 2500w to 3000w and actually shipped to NZ but this meant I couldn't use any of the standard element to tri clamp fittings but I found something to do the job. I was a bit worried as the pipe fitting I used was quite a bit longer than the ones designed specifically for elements which leaves more element than ideal behind the inlet, this increases the risk of scorching as there is probably little to no movement of liquid over this part of the element but having tasted some of the delicious malty wort first run from the first run I can say it most defiantly was not scorched and I had the rate of flow through the tube going very slow as to avoid a stuck mash which I have had a few problems with recently.

So pretty stoked with the results so far.

Heres a link to the rims. Apex and SHFC are the same people they seem to have moved it to their other store now.

And the 1.5 inch version with element adapter.

They seem to be about the cheapest decent RIMS tubes around once you factor in buying all the clamps and fittings some of the cheaper ones don't have.

I have a question about the following...

when adding fruit to your fermenter, surely by doing this you bump up the alcohol ? how do you calculate this?

I brewed a belgian ale, 1.06 OG, after 9 days in fermenter it read 1.012, after which i added 1.5 kg feijoas.

I transferred it to another fermenter today, having had the fruit in it for nearly 4 weeks. The reading now is 1.010. Just curious to know. Will bottle soon and leave it to sit till summer's here . 

so those 2 point add abv, the trick is to rack on top of the fruit, and take areading once its all "Mixed to see what sort of OG difference the Sugar i nteh fruit makes, and work it out from there.

for example - I added Tart cherry concentrate to a beer recently - the beer originall finished at 1.008

then added the concentrate and the beer was at 1.010, it then finished at 1.006.

I'm brewing a Black IP (second brew on the Grainfather)

what are you aiming for?

If your looking for a True Black IPA (Black and Dry like a normal IPA) then you've got too much gladiator.

TBH theres too much gladiator as it is.

I have GF and My Black IPA is 430g CaraMunich II and 310 g Carafa II

thenm munich and pale for the main base.

hops look good, the only thing I'd change is increase your Flameout (Maybe take 10g from each of the dryhops and add them to that)

It also wont be 80 IBU (the Steep/whirlpool calcs in Beersmith are way out I've found. so you could compensate by increasing the 60min.)

Stones Old Black IPa was 350 each of CMunich II and Carafa Special III then all Pale Malt.

I agree with Rob (BTW are you on the Grainfather Users Facebook Rob?) about the Gladiator and the FO hops. A true black IPA should be a regular IPA with about 5% of the grist replaces with something like Carafa III to turn it black; if you're drinking it blindfolded it should be pretty much indiscernible from a regular IPA. Brewing to style-nazi-guidelines is dumb though, so if you like the Munich in your regular IPA then add it in the black one too, and if you want it a bit more roasty then go to town.

With regard to the IBU from the whirlpool additions, what I do to make the calculations easier is chill to 80C before adding the last hops so they contribute nothing to the IBU. That also lets you add a big dose of something good for FWH for bittering, I'm not sure how much influence it has on the taste but I love the smell of Sauvin steeping while I'm running the sparge!

IMO the whirlpool/80degree thing I have had no effect really. Maybe slightly less bitterness, but nothing major. I think Brulosophy did a post on it.

When I brewed the same beer recently a couple oftime, I tried it, and there wasn't a perceiveable difference for me. but thats just me.

Yeah I remember that xBmt, just went back and re-read it and it seems like he's talking more about flavour/aroma than straight IBU? But I'm sure he would have mentioned it if one was noticeably more bitter. It doesn't say how big his whirlpool addition was though, and I wonder if the difference may be more noticeable with IIPA-quantities of high alpha hops compared to a smaller session-y APA amounts.

You're probably right, but on the other hand it doesn't take much to run the chiller to drop it down from boiling to ~80C and then you can definitely leave the whirlpool additions out of the IBU calculation and not worry about it being too bitter.

thanks for the feedback Rob and David. I do like a little gladiator... but yes – perhaps a little heavy handed. What do you think of this tweak:
