A big thank you to the judges yesterday Neil Miller and Matt Warner from Parrot Dog brewing and attendees, Lee Jackson came in third so has chosen Black IPA for the next style, Andrew Cherry was in second and in first was myself.  Here is the style guidelines for Black IPA, bring it on I say!!

American-Style Black Ale

American-style Black Ale is perceived to have medium high to high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma with medium-high alcohol content, balanced with a medium body. Fruity, floral and herbal character from hops of all origins may contribute character. The style is further characterized by a moderate degree of caramel malt character and dark roasted malt flavor and aroma. High astringency and high degree of burnt roast malt character should be absent.

Original Gravity (ºPlato) 1.056-1.075 (14-18.2 ºPlato)
Apparent Extract/Final Gravity (ºPlato) 1.012-1.018 (3-4.5 ºPlato)
Alcohol by Weight (Volume) 5-6% (6-7.5%)
Bitterness (IBU) 50-70
Color SRM (EBC)

35+ (70+ EBC)

 Another Interpretation

Black IPA

An emerging beer style roughly defined as a beer with IPA-level hopping, relatively high alcohol and a distinct toasty dark malt character. Typically lacks the roastiness and body of a strong stout and is hoppier than a strong porter. Expressive dry-hopping is common. Also called India Dark Ale, India Black Ale, Cascadian Dark Ale, Dark IPA, and sometimes India Brown Ale.

its at the fork n brewer aye

Folks - is there an entry fee for this?

I have a pretty lame Black IPA that I wasn't going to bother bringing, it's just not hoppy, plus it's a low ABV. But if there's $10 or so to throw into the hat I'm happy to go in for the sake of taking part...

Yep $10 per entry dude, see you down there. I reckon it could be a bumper prize for the winner this round

Sure is at the Fork and Brewer.

Tomorrow's Judges are beer writer and IPA inhaler Neil Miller, New Zealands best brewery fabricator Chris Banks from Banks Brewing, Owner and Head Brewer of Kereru Brewing Chris Mills.

A big thanks To Neil, Chris Banks and Chris Mills for judging the 11 Entrants, Pretty high Standard of beers in the Competition I reacon.

Congratulations to myself again for Winning I promise you I dont pay off the judges!! Even though Its was a One Two finish for me it did look suspect. David From Palmy came in third.

Since David couldnt make it, the style was chosen by fourth place getter Richard who choose Northern English Brown Ale for the next Style

The Date for the Next event is 11 August at the Fork and Brewer, Just one week before Beervana.

There were a number of very decent beers to sample. A few could use some work, but overall I was very impressed with the beers we judged. I don't have copies of my notes, but you all should have these back by now. I tried to offer constructive comments where possible and hope my handwriting was not too hard to read.

Thanks very much for the opportunity to be a judge!

Cheers,

Chris

Well done Mike it was a mean beer !  perfect date in August for me too

Since he wasnt there he had to forfit the choice, Richard choose Northern English Brown Ale

Ah, I see. Does thou haveth thine style guidelines for this particular brew? I want to have a crack at it this time around. Wellingtoninapint used up all my equipment so I couldn't get a Black APA down in time :(
