Thought it might be handy to have a thread for some of the more advanced brewers to give some advice on recipes.

Let's see how it goes eh...

I always use US-05 for my porters. It's pretty neutral in a beer with that much other flavour going on.
Sweet as, cheers pal. I'll go with 05 then. Last beer i brewed was an APA with US-05 and its cloudy as fuck. Not sure if its the yeast tho but my last two brews that i used with S-23 came out clear as
Yeah, it's SO5, it'll do that.

If you've got room for the fermenter in a fridge chuck it in there for a few days before bottling/kegging, it'll help the yeast drop out.

You can also use gelatine or isinglass as finings to help the yeast drop out also.
BC doesn't have an online store but you can order via email or phone call.

If it's only a 60 minute and you've got it I'd go for Southern Cross - it's my go to bittering hop. The majority of flavour and aroma from the 60 min hop is boiled out anyway, especially in a strongly malt flavoured beer like this, so variety isn't too important. Southern Cross is pretty good also because it has relatively low cohumulone levels which give it a softer, more pleasant bitterness rather than a harsh bitterness.

Don't use SO4 - for anything, ever.

SO5 is the way to go mate.
Cheers for the advice, i might have to start using finings maybe, aint really got the room to chill the fermentor. Yeah i knew that most of the flavour goes from doing a 60 min boil, but the recipe just called for the nugget. I'll def use the Southern Cross tho. Whats the deal with S-04? i only thought of using it cos porters are english ales right? i dunno haha.

So you reckon i should try Liberty after next Monday? i have registered on their site, but i read that they may be closing
Ah, don't listen to him. S04 is fine. Got me joint champion overall beer in the NHC.
I wish I could stick my Oar in and suggest you wait untill after this weekend before you place an order with any HBS...

Missed the closing down sale, any opening specials ?
Sweet as i'll use the S-05 in the porter, but i think i'll invest in finings this time round.
If you cant chill down your fermenter the best finings IMO is gelatine as it still works quite well at 20*c
I wouldn't bother with finings in a porter - if you want to be able to see through it, you're brewing the wrong beer
Are Liberty still shut for stocktaking ?

email or phone Mike at Brewers Coop and ask for a pricelist or have a chat about what you want to buy.

use the us-05 for the porter - it's an (the) american dried ale yeast

Liberty will be trading again as of Monday 12 October.
