Whats a good base malt to go for? What are your experiances with various base malts?

Ive used Global Pilsner, Maris Otter, ADM Pils, and Golden Promise... Out of all these, I keep coming back to Golden promise cos its so yummy!

Ive just run out of base malt and was looking at getting another sack, im fond of maris but its a bit grunty for some of the things that I brew, so again I was leaning towards golden promise...

But then I was looking at Liberty brewing, and saw that as well as the above, they have Bairds Pearl malt? Has anyone tried this? Thoughts???

Looks like you need to buy the sack of the Pearl for evaluation.

If you don't like it, then it's back to the GP.

I've not tried either the Pearl or GP, so I can't give you any comparison
Hmmm, Stu do you have any descriptors for the Pearl malt?
Sorry mate, I don't have anything other than the below piece off (from the Cryer website). It is a shade darker than GP and MO at the moment - 6.9 EBC, as opposed to the 6.3 EBC of the other two - and is considerably lower beta-glucanese.

From Cryer's website:
Pearl Pale Ale Malt: Used extensively on the West Coast of the USA in IPA's etc this variety is a great workhorse in small and large breweries. The grains are fully modified and it gives a great extract and full malt flavour profile.
Cheers Stu - Yet another sign that this is what I should be buying :o)

Mikes convinced me to try the Pearl malt, gonna pick up a sack next week and see how it goes...

Apparantly its more nuetral than Maris Otter and Golden Promise
Its the King for APA's AIPAs etc!!
Bro - you know how to tip me over the edge dontcha :o) Off to buy me a sack of Pearl malt.. And an added bonus is apparantly its cheaper than GP and MO ;o) Score!!
I've used Pearle in about 90% of my beer so not too familar with other bases but I've never had any dramas with it.

Low DP though so keep that in mind for adjunct beers, probably nothing a handful of pils couldn't fix though.
I'm interested in pearl too. Did you use Pearl in your wheat beer in the case swap?
Nope, Bo Pils and Light Wheat, both Weyermann with double decoction mash.

At the moment I'm thinking pearl is great for anything ~16 SRM or less, otherwise you've got enough specialities that the character is wasted.

Hmmmm, Gladfields ale malt? Anyone know a supplier on AK, would really like to give this malt a shot.
Hey Guys, Do you guys sub American 2 Row with a certain base? I have GP and Global Pils. Ta
I'd give Golden Promise the thumbs up for that Sub. Malturop Pils seems to be a good option too. Global Pils is waaaaaaaaaaaay to fat to make that sub though.
