ADM Pils Malt?

So I'm almost finished my sack of BB pale malt and looking to get another sack of base.

What's the deal with this ADM malt? Any good? Worth buying a sack? Pros? Cons? DMS levels? Better/worse than Barrett Burston pale? Hasn't been around long enough to tell?

Oh well, went Baird's haha. Probably do a couple of light ales in the near future with ADM to see what it's like.

I just kegged my first APA brewed with ADM last night. Have to say it's not tasting very good at all.
First thing I've noticed is a ridiculous amount of protein in the kettle. Overwhelmed the hop heap. Tons of the stuff. You have to allow for it in your recipe otherwise you end up with considerably less wort than you bargained for.

The clincher though is the complete lack of malt character. My fairly subdued APA by usual standards - 1.055/44IBU tastes bitter and thin, not a lot of malt in there at all to balance a fairly modest hopping schedule. And it didn't keg very clear either, usually my beers are pretty bright going into the keg.
I'm hoping I don't have to tip the lot out, because I have a repeat in the fermenter following close behind and I need that one for a boys weekend away.

I'm definitely sticking with either Baird's Maris Otter or Golden Promise from now on, I've only ever had great results from either. I only got this because Mike had run out and I needed something. Should've bloody waited.

It's a pilsner malt Barry. Don't forget that. You'd need to build up the malt profile with a fair amount of crystals etc if you were going to use it in an APA. With GP or MO you could probably get away with nothing else.

One thing I noticed with the Gladfield pale malt, and someone mentioned this to me about ADM, is that it is very dry and husky cmpared with the UK ones. I was talking to Steve Nally about this one the weekend and he reckons (sounds sound to me too) that it is because southern hemisphere barley is grown in dry regions. He's hoping to see some southland grown barley getting malted soon... from the weather down there on the weekend, I think it'd be a good move.

Yeah well, Mike sold it to me as "the malt that David Cryer is replacing Aussie pale with". The sack said pils, so maybe I should've paid more attention to the malt profile of my recipe.

Fair enough. But I'm so used to having 96% "pale malt" and a touch of crystal tasting simple fabulous that this is a little disappointing.

Ill buy the rest of the sack off of you? I havnt minded my beers with ADM personally, but I dont really go for a big malt character in alot of my beers... Guess it wont be a good malt for our barley wine?

Nah mate, a mate of mine is going to grab a sack of Maris for me today. You can definitely have the rest of this stuff :) I'll give it to you, I don't think it's worth selling. OUCH.

I reckon Golden Promise for the barley wine. Maris might be a bit too much.

GP sounds good for the BW, maybe with a touch of Maris to spruce it up a bit...

That Barley Wine you tasted yesterday is almost entirely Maris Otter (just a touch of dark crystal). You're going American-style though, aren't you? In which case paler is probably better.
