- About Me:
- I am a semi-retired Englishman who made New Zealand his home in 1986. Before emigrating I had invested thousands of hours and pounds in various real ale pubs in England and had a passion for real, hand-pulled beer. For the first 19 years living in or near Christchurch, New Zealand, the "pub" part of my life was absent. Local bars usually had TV screens and served very cold nats piss. The twisted Hop opened in or around 2005/6 as a pub/micro brewery, making and serving excellent English style beers by hand-pump. It soon became my second home. Sadly,the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake badly damaged many buildings very close to the Twisted Hop. The "earthquake-proofing of the Twisted Hop building seems to have worked but its fate may be influenced by the need to demolish so many buildings all around it. Long live the Twisted Hop. A friend and I have been home brewing for a couple of years, using malt barley, hops and yeast, that is, brewing from basics, not from kits. Our current challenge os to improve our use of yeast.
