Hi Stu, that's some good looking wort !

I have a false bottom question... I notice I have the same Mash tun as you, I ordered mine off more beer recently. They included the 9" false bottom, rather than the 12" and it covers only about two thirds of the bottom of the cooler (10 gallon), at first I thought they had made a mistake but when I looked back at the description that's how it was advertised.

Ive done two or three brews with it so far, seems to work awesome, good efficiency and no stuck sparges etc, but no matter how much I vorlof I still seem to end up with little bits floating around..just wondering if you've got the 9" or the 12" and if you've ever had similar problems..I'm wondering if pieces of husk are getting sucked underneath the false bottom where it meets the floor of the cooler.

Cheers!

Gidday Matt

Mine covers the entire bottom (i'll have a pic soon, when I finally organise my brewday pics and write a blog). I have little bits floating through now and then but it really doesn't worry me as long as the wort itself is clear. So it if looked pretty much like the above but there were half a dozen bits little bits of husk in there I would be ok with that. It really depends on the grain. Here's an example: I did a Saison Barleywine that required a double mash recently... the first-part was pale malt and a few dark speciality malts and wheat... run off was a clear as this. The second-part was all pilsner and a little wheat and, although it was pretty clear, had a fair bit more grain material in the run off. The beer is fine (in fact I'm getting through it way too fast). If I was to do the same thing again, I'd mix the Pilsner malt in across both mashes. I guess the pilsner is a bit more brittle than the UK pale.

Cheers

Stu

That's odd, the more specialties I add the longer I take to get runoff free of bits.
The more pale I have, the quicker I'm free of floaties

Cheers for that !

Sounds like I'll be all good, I generally get clear wort but with a few floatie bits like you mentioned. Just wasn't used to it since using a stainless braid previously that didn't let anything through at all, and Ive heard of tannin extraction from boiling grain but I guess you'd need a good amount in the kettle before it was noticeable.
