Crabby..I used to get a vortex in the 2 litre flask all the way down to the bottom..it was like a giant whirlpool...The vortex in this one is about 2 inches deep...Any faster and the stirrer bar spins out of the magnets hold...PANTS...Think I need more magnets?

Do you need the vortex to the bottom for it to move the starter around for sufficient propagation?

Approx 2 inches..Same as james et al...It would also appear the base of the 5l is a fair bit thicker than the 2l therefore putting the magnets a bit further away from the stirbar and weakening the field.

Interestingly enough..IF i fill the 2l upto the 2l mark it also only gives me approx 3 inch deep vortex..The picture I had originally taken of it in action was approx 1.5l full.. didn't realise that until i checked the picture !

Go oldschool/altschule chaps! Give it a shake every now and then. Mr Malty in his 14 essential questions about yeast starters deals with the static yeast container versus the shaken every now and then one versus the full on stirplate. As a technophobe and hopeless DIYer I'm doing the shaken one. Think bond

Probably need to upgrade my fan to a 120mm with dual magnets to achieve a decent spin... exbeeriments exbeeriments...

There's a website somewhere that shows to increased cell growth from stirred vs shaken etc, it's a massive increase using the stirplate.... now to buy more yeast for the bank!
