Planning a larger kettle and thought I might as well put a whirpool return inlet on it while I'm at it. I understand the general idea is approx 1/3 up with a 30 degree tangent to the pot. What is the general consensus on the inside of the kettle? Flush? Straight pipe in or fit a tube following the curve of the pot? Can't find many pic's of inside the kettle.

Straight pipe in or curve won't matter much, but having it flush with the inside of the kettle is a benefit because it results in less noise with regards the actual whirlpool action (less of a physical protuberance to inhibit good whirlpooling).

Here's a picture of mine (photo taken while starting to clean the vessel so it's still a bit grubby):

 

 

It's a 90° elbow, compression fitting and a bent S/Steel tube.  It's a bit lower than a third up because I want to be able to use it when I do half batches.  I can't tell how well it works yet because I'm going to try it for the first time this weekend so I'll report back if you like.  I don't see any reason why it won't work, though.
