I know that ideally once we keg a beer it should be put in the kegerator but now I have 5 kegs I don't have enough room. I want to get ahead of the game so as a keg empties I have a new one ready to go in. Can these kegs that are waiting to go in the fridge be stored ok at room temp? I can't see it being any different to storing bottled beer at room temp so what's the difference?

Secondly if it is ok to store like this should they be given a quick squirt of gas before storing or at least a couple of days under pressure, or carbonated fully first then stored away? I guess bulk priming with sugar in the keg is another option, would you still give it a quick hit of gas to purge any oxygen though?

No different than using a secondary fermenter really.

I'd purge the keg with CO2 before and after the transfer though, unless it's cellar temp and English ale you'll probably have a hard time getting it full carbed at room temperature so I'd leave that until it's chilled.

If you bulk prime I'd still purge it.

Purging isn't really necessary as such, in either situation, but if you have the facility to do it you might as well.
I have the same situation - five kegs and only room for four.
And if one runs dry - I want to have a replacement to fill the gap.

You can gas it to dispensing pressure, rock & roll style, or like you suggested, just purge & pump up the headspace.

I purge, rock & roll and leave it until needed. First pint is warm, semi carbonated and delicious !
Thanks guys, I'll probably give it a good minute's blast of gas, give it a shake, another blast and then store it away until I get room to fridge it.
