SS Braided hose in Christchurch

Hi guys,

Just getting the mash tun up and running and was wondering if anyone knew where to source parts in Christchurch, in particular ss braided hose. I'm guessing the ball lock valve and copper can be brought from most plumbing supplies?

Any help is appreciated!

Any plumbing supplier for a washing machine hose and pull the rubber inner out.

 

The demo I saw used stainless wire to make a 'spring' to thread through in order to stop the braid being crushed shut by the grain.  Don't know how necessary this is, but my 'stainless' wire went a nasty black and left flaky bits in the mash tun.

I ended up using parts from Oakley and Mitre10. I bought a braided host from each. Mitre10 hose is longer and cheaper but not as thick or strong, not this it has given me any problems. Check out my pics for my design. 

 

Overall Mitre10 was cheaper unless you have a trade account. The only part I couldn't get at Mitre10 was a 1/2" threaded to barbed hose adaptor.

 

One thing I didn't expect was how much it all costs, it came to about $90.

Got my braided hose from Placemakers. At the time they had a 90cm one for less money. I looped both ends onto a T-junction, and I've never yet had a stuck sparge. The ball valve and pipe bits were cheaper from Bunnings when I bought mine 18 months ago.

It was at either HCD Flow Tech or Blackwood Paykels, sorry can't remember which, but they had the stuff on a roll so you can buy it to length, I've always found the longest ones at the hardware stores a touch too short.

Not sure on the local supply situation down your way - but if it helps you get the parts ...
I made my T piece and elbow arrangement that you attache the braid loop onto from 1/2" garden irrigation fittings. All elbows, Ts, clips etc that I use are the cheap black poly plastic neta irrigation parts from Mitre 10.
These were a hell of a lot cheaper than copper if thats the way you want to go.
The stainless braid slides onto the end of an T arrangement with a stainless hose clamp to keep it in place.

Rustled up a pic of the way I set up my 45L esky mashtun manifold. 

The Neta parts all fitted together well - and the 1" to 0.5" step down T to 2 elbows made fitting the braid pretty easy.   

Parts wise I was lucky as I had a few bits kicking around (long braid from scrapped dishwasher, cistern tap and brass fittings) but even if I had to buy them the overall cost would still have been low compared with using copper fittings.

I've found a company in Auckland who can do Ø13 for $31/m and Ø19 for $37/m (includes GST). Plus freight.

I'm going to get some, so if anyone in ChCh wants some, let me know how much and what diameter and we can split the postage. 

I was going to try wrapping some SS MIG wire around a rod to make a long support coil for the braid.  Anyone tried this or similar?  Does it help?
