Yes, looked at this, it is "Bavarian Pilsener" extract - they mix it with Carapils and the colour is quite a bit darker (I think 6-8 Loviwhatevers instead of 2 L for the Breiss stuff which does not seem to be imported here). (I am assuming this is significanlty different, perhaps it is not?) Hmm, maybe I should wait to do this AG, do something else in the meantime... I'll call BC and see what they say about it.
Nick, if you don't have a temp controller find out what temperature your fridge sits at normally. It would be nice to lager near 0C, however if your fridge sits between 3 and 6C then you will still get the benefit of lager without strict control.
To test put a cup of water in the fridge overnight and test the temperature. Should be reasonably accurate.
I have the luxury of two fridges and a chest freezer with two temp controllers..... oh and my name is James and I am an addict.
Have to agree with Tony, there is no real substitute for Czech Saaz if you are hunting the flavour. Riwaka if you want a NZ hop (none left at NZ Hops though) and although I have mixed up a little NZ hallertau, it doesn't perform for me that well.
Also Pacifica, which is supposedly an "old world" Hallertauer Mittlefrüh mixed with NZ standard breed no name hop, is there however never used it.... so I think I have a new exbeeriment coming up!
Cheers for that Denim. NZ Hallertau would be fine in a kolsch, it's not that assertive but is a bit more Euro then the NZ versions of Saaz. Earthy & woody.

Nick. I have done a price comparison and I find Ross cheaper than NZ prices, even with postage. I don't find the compulsion now to buy up large on orders. I just ordered a smack pack of Belgian ale yeast. It was still $10 cheaper than anywhere I could get it in NZ, with postage!
