I haven't been able to finish the mash tun yet but I quite fancy making an all grain pilsner next. Does anyone know why I couldn't do a steeped mash in the boil kettle, and if I can what would be an expected efficiency?
No reason you can't do it - but you'll want to have a second big vessel to transfer the resulting liquid to (eg fermenter), and a way of filtering so you don't bring a bunch of grain across. If you're doing a full batch remember that this will mean lifting around 20kg of pot, water and grain to do any tipping if your kettle doesn't have a tap.
If your crush and sparge are good, I don't see any reason you couldn't get a decent efficiency off this.
