Detoxic is great, and a month off any alcohol can provide a surprise on the scales if that is what you are looking for also.
I found a six weeks off of alcohol was easy to achieve and it helped alleviate a sleeping disorder, stress levels, skin condition and overall feeling like crap.
If you don't think you can go a month Kempicus, try a week to start with and build up to it!
I'd not recommend giving up alcohol to anyone trying to lose weight. It isn't worth it - that steak or big serving of spaghetti is doing ou way more damage. About 18 months ago I dropped 10kg in 10 weeks and I was still drinking a pint or two every night.
Despite what everybody says I can tell you the real key, and it will cost you nothing but your next ten seconds: Eat less fat, oil and carbohydrates, eat more vegetables. If you aren't very active, get active. Nothing else works, this realy does. And, if you are lucky, you'll turn around your standard diet to meet these requirements.
Agree with your stress, sleep and skin comments though James - try a couple of "standard drinks" a night, rather than fully giving up (or a dozen!!)...
"...Eat less fat, oil and carbohydrates, eat more vegetables. If you aren't very active, get active..."
Yeah haha. It's awesome when people are like 'you gotta do this or that special thing to lose weight', I feel like saying 'no, you gotta stop eating so many fucking pies and get off your arse'.
Anyways, no new years resolutions for me, I never stick to them so don't bother making them :-P

Ditto. I'm forever trying to convince the guys at work to go to D4 for an Epic or a Booky when they're shouting for whatever reason (Birthdays, etc), but due to the cost and closeness, we usually end up at The Bull & Bear with a Hop Rocker, Sassy Red or Kilkenny.
Sorry should have put that a little better, 'why' was meant as 'what are your reasons behind this' not why would you want to....
I agree completely, a person that drinks every day is gonna find a month more daunting than a person that only drinks beer a couple of times a week....starting small will be more achievable.
I also agree that detoxing is a good thing, from time to time i've had enforced layoffs (was off the sauce at the NHC prizegiving which really sucked) but i don't actually drink enough for it to make any difference to me
I did 5 months in 2002. It was a drunken statement, on a birthday night out in July, that I was too stubborn to not follow through with. It was combined with a lot of cycling, so they went together well.
I've made a new years resolution to brew more this year... I wouldn't making a few others if I get some time to stop and think about it.

I don't see the point in taking a month off the sauce. What's the point in detoxing if you're just going to retox again as soon as you finish? If you're concerned about your drinking, maybe you should adjust your intake to a more suitable level where you can indulge on a regular ongoing basis (happily ever after).
My NY resolution is to continue what I started this year:
Maintain some regular brewing, drinking, healthy eating and exercise.
