Hop cones seem to go by many names. 'Cones' is most common, but they also get referred to as 'whole leaf' or as 'flowers'. None of these is problematic, since we all know what is being referred to BUT, for the botanically pedantic, the correct term is infructescence. In other words they are an ensemble of fruits. The flower of a hop plant is the burr.
I'm not suggesting anyone bothers to call them infructescences in a brewing context; 'cones' is best in my opinion. Most common and less incorrect than leaf or flower (though, as an aside, those who grow hops might notice the odd true leaf protruding roguely out the side of some cones. Kind of a pain, since you have to pick them out before brewing, but they do look cool).
