Hi everyone

I recently got to brew my NZ Pale Ale that won at NHC 2012 at Hallertau and I am having a release party to celebrate in Wellington on the 27th of April at the Kelburn Village Pub, starting at around 4pm. There is a link with more details about the event here.  It would be great to see a good bunch of other Wellington homebrewers and beer aficionados along to the event.

I will also post details at some stage in the near future about the availability of the beer up in Auckland too. It will certainly be on tap at Hallertau at some point in the near future. Much thanks must go to Greig and everyone who was involved with organising NHC, along with Steve from Hallertau for putting up such a fantastic prize.

Cheers,
Richard

That was a very nice drop and thank you for the invite.

I (and others) would love to know how your on-tap beer compared to the brew which won the NHC 2012..?

Hey Grant

Great to have you along! Sorry I didn't manage to speak to you on the night.

A few things about this recipe:

-The beer was a little more bitter than the homebrewed example and slightly more of a citrus/orange type character than the original. We used a whole heap of cascade in the hopback on brewday, partly for practical reasons as we didn't want to block up the heat exchanger (we forgot to put the hop filter in the kettle!). Otherwise it was very similar in flavour and I was really happy with how it turned out. Simon and Steve from Hallertau did a fantastic job of brewing it and helping me adapt the recipe to a fairly different system, especially in terms of dealing with the hot whirlpool and longer chilling time.

-My original recipe design which I posted on here used Thomas Fawcett Pale Crystal. However, after rebrewing it twice at home and comparing it with the original,  I later discovered by happy accident that my original beer actually used the medium crystal- the homebrew shop gave me the wrong the malt! (I've brewed it with both and and it tastes great either way, slightly more toffeish with the medium and dryer with the pale). We used medium crystal for the recipe and I love the balance that it gives to the beer.

No worries, it was great to be there and to try it.

It is amazing how well little cock-ups (or simply running out of your first choice malts) can lead to a good brew adjustment.

Good brew, thanks.
