price has gone up but you'd struggle to get copper cheaper than this :)
I've contacted brass123 and he is sending me a 20m roll. Figured I can use this to make a chiller as well as a pre-chiller to stick in some ice water to speed up the cooling on a warm day.
What would be the best lengths to use for each?
Was thinking something like 6m for pre-chiller and 14m for the wort chiller.
I used the whole 15m (I brought) to make an immersion chiller.
I made up a pre-chiller with a 3m length of 13mm clear pvc tube with a length of No.8 wire inside. I bent the tube into a pretty tight coil with your typical hose fittings on each end. This then sits in a 10 litre bucket of water which I stick in the freezer for a couple days pre brewday. I end up with a bucket of solid ice.
Once the immersion chiller gets the wort down to around 30'C, I hook the 'pre-chiller' up and turn the hose pressure right down. Cools the wort down to 17'C pretty fast in summer (when the tap water is around 20'C).
Won't need to use this method at the moment ... I measured the temp of the tap water a few days ago and it's about 10'C.
What did a 20m coil cost?
It was $80 + shipping.
I've set mine up with two valves and a bypass so I can skip the pre chiller while getting the wort temps down initially then flick the valves and run through both chillers. Its got quick connects so I can just leave out the pre chiller in winter.
Just need to add the actual chillers to the circuit now :)
Here's your chance if anyone out there is looking for some - they'll go fast -
