A query re using BeerSmith - "batch" and "boil" definition

Hi guys - I'm a newby at all grain (but its going very well so far with 2 very successful brew!!) and am looking to use some recipes prepared via BeerSmith.

My question is - what is the difference between Batch size and Boil size in the recipe? Is "Boil size" the volume I boil for mashing, or the volume of wort I expect to get from the mash after sparging (which I then boil)?

Taking a specific example refer to http://www.beersmith.com/Recipes2/recipe_179.htm?utm_source=getresp... for ATG English Pale Ale where Boil size is 5.64gal and batch size is 6.60gal.

Sorry if this is a bit of a "doh" question . . .

Thanks

Dave

Boil size is the amount going into the boiler. Batch size is the amount going into the fermenter. Sometimes beersmith recipes have a topup of water into the fermenter to get your final volume (for example if you have a small pot for your boiler and can't boil enough). If you've got the actual software you'll see this in the brew steps view, or whatever it's called. The demo is free if you don't have it.

Gotcha - many thanks!
