Since this is the most popular thread on the RealBeer.co.nz forum I thought I would start it here just to see what happens

Funny that you are brewing a Landlord - I'm doing one 2morrow! I too have an OG of 1043, but IBU of 35. I have Fuggle to bitter, Kent for 45 (1oz) and Styrian at 5min (one ounce). It is 100% Golden Promise pale with caramel added to the boil for colour. We can exchange landlords next month, Martin.
That sounds pretty close to the 'real' Landlord recipe according to the Real Ale Almanac. I decided to go SMaSH on this one to see what happens.

Yes, a comparison next month would be great - I'l have to try and hang onto some!
My next brew will be a SMaSH as well. Was hoping to get it done today but no time.

I'm going Bairds Pale to 1.045.

NZ Goldings for 20L at - 8g FWH, then 15 g at 45, 30, 15, 0 (26 IBU)

I'm just wondering if I should ramp it up to 30 - 35 IBU hmmmmmm....
All my SMaSH brews are aimed at 30 IBU.

This was on Stu's recommendation (I think) so that you can get a good feel for the bitterness that the hops bring to the beer. I tasted a hydrometer sample and the bitterness was prominent but not too much.
Ok, cheers, trust in both you and Stu, cranking her up to 30.

EDIT - choice, 15g at each interval now.
Well, this is basically what I brewed today. The only change was to drop the 60 minute addition to 25g of Styrians. The wort is chilling now and I'll be pitching the yeast shortly. OG was on-track going into the boil, I'll be interested to see if it's OK at pitching time.

Looking forward to tasting this one, and I need it too - think my keg of best bitter will blow dry in the next day or two.
Hmmm, just wondering what to brew for a first brew in my shiny new stainless conical....

I guess it'll have to be the Golden Ale Challenge ale.
Isn't that Golden Boy?
If I use all of the hops it'll be a hell of a lot hoppier!
Congrats on your purchase by the way. It looks fantastic.
Cheers. Can't believe my bid held up... I'm pretty happy.
I was thinking of placing the $500 to see if I'd get out bid! Would have been happy either way - the finance manager wouldn't though! Congrats on the kit Stu... Jellous much mate???
