It won't be cheap cheap... but... the brewer's guild had a partnership deal with an accomodation group this year. it might be worth emailing them, through the website, to see if this is happenning again. A shared apartment can mean luxury at a reasonable price, a booked out bunk room in a backpackers is the next best thing i guess. You have got to stay in the central city... it's so much better to be able to walk everywhere. great city for that.

Beervana is at the town hall, bang in the middle, and all the other events are close to there. The only things you'd need public transport for is to get out to Bar Ed and maybe down to New World Island Bay for some odd rarities (you can have lunch at the cafe across the road that has Tuatara on tap).

Is the SOBA AGM on that weekend again?

Brewers Guild to honour classic Kiwi beer styles

New Zealand’s indigenous beer styles will be honoured with two new trophies at this year’s BrewNZ Beer Awards to be held in Wellington in August. Best in class trophies will be awarded to the highest rated entries in both the classic New Zealand Draught and the Golden Lager style categories.

Brewed using a combination of ale and lager brewing techniques, New Zealand Draughts and Lagers are hybrid styles that are unique to this country.

In announcing the new awards, the Brewers Guild of New Zealand (BGNZ) has recognised the importance of this country’s classic beer styles. BGNZ Chairman David Cryer says, “These new awards emphasise the significance of this country’s classic beer styles on the world stage and highlight New Zealand’s status as a strong brewing nation.”

To recognise the innate creative passion of brewers, the BGNZ has also taken the decision to reintroduce Festive Brews. This will enable brewers to create beers which challenge and educate the palate of New Zealand’s drinking public, one of the foremost aims of BGNZ. This year’s festive beers category is entitled, "Wheat - it's not just for bakers", a broad category that enables brewers to express themselves by creating something special from within the spectrum of wheat-influenced styles.

Class: A Trophy: NZ Champion Brewery

Class: B Trophy: Champion International Brewery

Class: C Trophy: European lager styles

Class: D Trophy: International lager styles

Class: E Trophy: European ale styles

Class: F Trophy: New Zealand, US & International ale styles

Class: G Trophy: Stouts and Porters

Class: H Trophy: Wheat and other grain styles

Class: I Trophy: Flavoured and aged styles (incl. Fruit/Spice/Herb/Honey/Smoke)

Class: J Trophy: New Zealand Draught

Class: K Trophy: New Zealand Lager and Premium Lager

Class: L Trophy: Reduced alcohol, reduced carbohydrate and gluten-free beers

Class: M Trophy: Specialty, experimental, aged, barrel- and wood-aged styles

Class: N Trophy: To be announced

Class: O Trophy: Packaging

Class: P Trophy: Festive Brew

BrewNZ 2009 will be a week long celebration of beer and brewing held in Wellington in the last week of August. Showcasing all that’s best in beer, BrewNZ incorporates the BrewNZ Beer Awards and the public sampling event, Beervana, to be held at the Wellington Town Hall.

BrewNZ is the official New Zealand beer event, endorsed by the Brewers Guild of New Zealand. The Guild aims to grow the beer category in New Zealand by facilitating brewer and consumer education about beer, being the united voice of the brewing industry, and by developing BrewNZ into a globally recognised, world class beer event.

The official event website is www.brewnz.co.nz which will be updated regularly with programme details. Tickets will be available from Ticketek from June 5.

You don't like Dunkel Weizens? Yummy! I'm more interested in the reasoning behind the other part. Is it paranoid of me to feel the clammy hand of the big two at work there?
