tasting and testing

I was disapointed with the brown ale with gervin ale yeast, seemed to be pretty hopless from the keg - I had it down as a mild instead.

but, tasting the bottled version tonight is quite different, very flavoursome, anyone struck that with keg vs bottle primed before ?

So, no mild to battle K H-M and B, but a Northern Brown !

I have similar experiences with bottle versus keg. They're not usually negative though, just differences. I guess the conditioning vessel really makes a difference. The bottles are usually carbonated more, which makes a massive difference.

I certainly find hop aroma is more pronounced from the bottle, but in large part thats because the draft version is going through the beer engine which tends to drive off the hop volatiles quickly.

Negative ? A bit, but only because my anticipation was higher than the hop value perceived when drinking from the keg.

Positive ! Hell yes, it's probably my best grain beer to date. I think it's a top beer from the bottle too, but very different to the keg.



Confused ? Always, now I have to set it in the correct category for the comp.
Too much hop flavour for a Southern Brown, maybe a bit short on nuttiness for a Northern Brown.
I'd have another to help me decide but I only have two bottles left !

Tonight I'm checking the Pilsner and Bitter.
From what I remember of the Bitter in the keg I don't think I'll be entering it.

Oh, and I have my first bitter with Gervin yeast to try from the keg tonight too.
