It looks pretty good, quite thin metal, but it arrived in one piece with a lid (its huge). Iv not used it yet and its away getting a hole drilled for a spigot.
I personally went with SS as i think it will wear better, but thats my opinion.
good luck

How big is your pot buddy? didnt you get a massive one? Or was it about 40 litres? My pots only 30 litres, and the absolute max I can fit is 28 litres and 4.2kg of grain, and that was pushing it...
Good to hear all went well, isnt it so easy? ;o) I personally found it easier than extract brewing... And way more fun!
Keep up the good work mate! Maybe we should do a case swap some time in the near future?
41 litres aint bad, its better than my 30 litre job, the most I can do is generall 20 litre 5% batches... But after my first batch Ive been itching for a bigger pot... Ive done 7 BIAB's now and am really keen for some bigger beers... I have a mate whos a fabricator making me a 100litre jobbie with a tap :o) Choice!!!
But yeah, interisland case swap could be choice!!! Im definately keen, im starting to get a shitload of beer under my bed and in my shed :oP
Haha, mate at the moment ive probably got about 200-300 litres in bottles... I ran out of beer once and vowed never again, having to pay for beer crippled me!!! The trick is to try and slow the drinking for a little while and stock up, I have four fermenters going at once, and a cube as well, so theres allways a constant flow of beer into the fermenters and into bottles, sometimes it feels like im running a small brewery, but it means ill be able to chill a little more in summer and taste the spills of my labour more haha :oP
If youre looking at brewing ahead, a cube is a really good way, you can do double batches on brew day, store 20 litres in the cube, and put 20 litres in the fermenter, its awesome!!!
And yeah, 100 litres is pretty big, but ill be able to do 50 odd litre batches quite comfortably, and if I want to do smaller ones ive allways still got the 30 litre pot :o) It balances out well...
"Palmer's Lord Crouchbacks Special Bitter recipe next in a fortnight. Mmm, bitter... :D"
It's a simple recipe but tastes great. I used Willamette and Styrian Goldings and had an OG:BU ratio of about 75%
For a real kick, add 1 gm per litre at 1 minute left in the boil - you could even dry hop (but I haven't tried that with this recipe - maybe next time)
Matey...... One fermenter and youre making beer for three people??? I think you need an upgrade big time! At least do yourself a favour and get another fermenter, allthough id suggest at least another 2-3... You can generally pick them up cheap as chips on trade me, 2 of mine were second hand and havnt had any issues after bleaching the shit out of them :o)
I personally dont even think one fermenter is enough for someone making beer for one person, let alone three... :oP lol You would be able to ferment in your carboy, heaps of Americans do...
Havent tried three boys yet, any good? Love Emersons tho...
I dont even bother with a secondary, ive thought about it, but it just seems like way more effort for little result... I get crystal clear beers most of the time anyway after the yeast drops out, and id rather have another beer fermenting than using a secondary... But thats just me.. If i was going to use oak chips or bourbon then id look at a secondary, but I just dont see the point for simple brews...
What was the recipe for your IPA? What hops did you use?
Special roast ? not sure what the locally available substitute would be, probably Amber or some home toasted ?
A good addition would be add a handful - say 30gm - of chocolate.
But personally, I'd keep the grainbill as basic as possible. You want to be able to pick the flavours out in the finished beer and that's going to be difficult if it gets too cluttered.
If you want to try different ingredients, plan a series of ales and change one ingredient at a time. Like do an ale with 5% caramalt, try one with 5% medium Crystal, one with 5% dark crystal ... appreciate the difference the change makes
I'm sure there are differences in Goldings, Kent Goldings, EKG and NZ Goldings - but my taste isn't sophisticated enough to detect it. I'd go with whatever variety you have on hand.
Sounds tasy, a bit citrusy for an IPA with the cascade, but im sure it tastes great... Ive got two APA's and a Golden Ale at the mo, and im doing a 75IBU IPA for fathers day :o)
I find that if I leave my beer long enough in the bottles 4-6 weeks it clears up perfectly and you dont get a yeastie taste... Allthough leaving beer bottled for 6 weeks is probably a bit hard with your flatmates around ;oP haha
Yeah mate kit yeasts are fully shit! I allways had a nasty yeasty taste with them, go the fermentis yeast all the way!
Ive also dry hopped in the primary and didnt have a problem... And I never really do lagers or pilsners, theyre too boring and take waaaay too long :oP haha
So $2 for Maris Otter and Golden promise??? Doesnt sound right, but reckon you could find out for me, cos if it is, man, i might have to get you to get some for me :o)
Hey HerrSchnapps, any chance you can take a photo of your burner where the smaller part is attached to the larger part. I have some rather large spaces between the gas nozzles and the big part of the burner and not sure I attached it right! (It's a green Bunnings one like yours.)
Cheers
Ah that makes more sense now.... doh. I thought I was missing a washer or something infront of the disc to seal the burner.... dry run with the keggle tonight then! :)
Thanks!
Hi Herrschnapps...How is your ' cheapish' SS pot from Trademe holding up...Ready to start investing a bit of dosh and am trying to avoid the lovely 40L Southern Hospitality pots at a hefty price..Cheers Ged
Irish Red??? Case swap?? Yes please :o) Put the recipe up, ive got my 2 case swap recipes up now :o) Starting to look forward to it!
Anyways, onto reculturing, im still waiting on my Wyeast to come from Craft brewer, along with all my kegging gear ;o) Yay! So ive only recultured commercial yeasts, ive done it twice now, put down a brew in the wkend with some Wyeast 1968, recultured out of two Renaissance beers...
this is what I do, 10g of DME to 100mls of water, boil for 10 mins, pour into a steralised jug, glad wrap, then put in the freezer untill it cools... I did 600mls last time and it took about 2 days for the 1968 to wake up... Basically, when the worts cooled, transfer to a 1.25 litre bottle, shake the hell out of it, then add dregs of two bottles and leave at room temp for a couple of days, and bobs your uncle...
So id just do the above, just step it up to 2 litres to make a nice big starter...
Buddy, just saw your recipe, the Wyeast smack packs are supposed to be fine for up to 1060 OG... And I allways repitch on yeast cakes and havent had a problem before...
Hey mate, was wondering what you did to get your BIAB efficiency up? I remember reading something about a "dunk sparge" or something? Wanna give me the low down?
Shit mate, good stuff 80% is a mean effort! I recently started adding boiling water to help bring me to mash out, but with the bag still in there, and that boosted my eff a few points, so ill try your way next and see if my figures improve...
Dont forget to post your tasting notes for the swap when you eventually get your beers :o)
Mate I really liked the ESB aye, ive still got a bottle to enjoy some other day, but I quaffed the first one down fairly quickly... I thought it had a really good balance, which is important as hell in an English Bitter, most of my attempts have been a major fail cos theyre allways too bitter :oP Not much chill haze to it which was good, an all round quaffer I reckon! Im looking forward to my next one!
I definately wouldnt say no to a 1084 stout tho :o)
Got any recent pics of your hop plant??? Mine is Nearly 2 meters tall now!!! I'm way proud of it! We should plan a same recipe brew with the flowers at the end of the season with the other guys who have got Danscade...?
Thanks Herr. Only just noticed this message. Nice of you guys to drink it all up before we get into town... I guess it just means we'll have to concentrate on a few Twisted Hop beers on Thursday.
We're probably going to do PKB again this year (if we can get all the hops we need), and it'll be even better than last year.
