Edit: maybe not.
Looks like the lab warehouse ones have power supply included, so I'm better off getting a brand new one for only an extra $10 to $20 by the time I get a second stir bar and power supply.

Thanks anyway Dermot.

hmm i must have the power supply then, as i got it from them. will check tomorrow.

labwarehouse only rated to 1 litre liquid i think on the manual. you can use 2 litre flasks, but boil 2 litres.. :s

i think i've got a thermofisher $450 one, but will check that out tomorrow as well :o

stirred for 2 days for a belgian blonde batch. came out really good.

Hey Bro

I'm keen on a Stir plate and a 5L flask

Cheers

just checked, comes with a digitor power supply. it's new about 3 months ago, haven't used as they only do 1 litre liquid.. i needed 4 litres.

let me know if still want it for $100 or anyone. cheers,

Right, so as it stands:
(Integersmirk, can you confirm if you are in or out, I know it may be difficult as I have no idea of the wellington to Nelson shipping cost, or size of package, etc)

Me - Stir Plate and 1x2L and 1x5L
Dan F - Stir plate and 5L flask
Chris B - 5L flask
Paul W - Stir Plate and 2x2L flasks
Integersmirk - 1x1L 1x5L and stir bar

Pricing based on Integersmirk included.
Stir plate x 3 at $147 each
5L flask x 4 at $49.60 each
2L flask x 3 at $39.10 each
1L flask x 1 at $22.80
stir bar - unknown size...
Shipping, will split this evenly between everyone - $unknown at this stage

Although if integersmirk doesn't want in on this, then I might get a second 5L for myself to keep the price down for everyone.

I'd like to place the order Thursday/Friday so should be enough time for any others to jump on board and for you guys to confirm.

From what Dermot has said you may want to check that the stir plate can handle stirring bigger volumes for those ordering 5L flasks and stirplates??

"labwarehouse only rated to 1 litre liquid i think on the manual"

If they are only rated to 1ltr, then I will pass on the stir plate and just get the flasks, as I have all the stuff at home to build my own stir plate "apart from time" and the test prototype I made stirred up 3ltrs really well, but I kept throwing the bar due to not using an erlenmeyer with its flat bottom.

yeah, that's weird tho, as it is rated to about the same RPM as a typical PC fan (if I remember rightly)
"0 to 2300rpm"

Although I guess its also about the loading (liquid resistance?) it can handle.

I'll get hold of lab warehouse and see what the story is.... standby......

Wow, crazy fast response from lab warehouse....

"The stirrer as such is not "rated" it makes no difference how much liquid you stir, however the plate top  is quite small …. so a big beaker will overlap the stirrer and may affect the size of stir bar you can use.

Did the person you spoke to try it and it did not work?  I think it should be OK with 3- 4 liters ….but I suggest you order and try - and if it does not work send it back for a refund."

So we should be OK. further research by me shows the morebeer stir plate only rated to 1000RPM and it is the same physical size, so I'm sure the lab warehouse one will be fine.

This thread was interesting in that it appears to be more about the flask size vs stir bar size and shape than trying to create the crazy vortex.

So, sounds like we will be fine with the labwarehouse stir plate?

Dermot - have you tried stirring 3-4litres with your lab warehouse stirplate? what were the results... i.e did it not work?

Cheers,

Brent

I am in.

Hmm, slightly less than 1/2 the price, but I do like the idea of buying locally and lab-grade....

found this in a thread on morebeer:

"I just got one from here: http://www.stirstarters.com
It works just as well as the Hanna. I stirred a 3L starter in a 5L flask last weekend. It needed a slightly larger stirbar, 1.5", though."

the circumference holds a 1 litre flask great. but then once you start getting to a 2 litre one, it's probably the max size you can fit on it. motor might be o.k, but it's just so small that a 5 litre flask is just funny sitting on it..

i've never used it..

would be good for 20-30 litre batches though.
