Hi Chris,
As you mentioned slants I wonder if you can help me with something...
I've made some slants and successfully trial cultured from. It's good fun and I am doing it so I have ready access to many strains but re-slanting every 3 months seems a pain (the recommended shelf life of a slant I believe).
It recently occurred to me that rather than slant I should be able to re-culture from a bottle of that brew the same as you would with a commercial beer.
I know it can be done but do know of any potential pitfalls or reasons not to do this?
