Any one used the stuff or can tell me what its equivalent in other brands is?

Not sure what it would be equivalent to but I used it in a light Pale Ale and it came out like a English Bitter.

I am not so sure if it was meant to help promote the hops or I used it wrong but only the hop bitternes came through.

Doesn't sound like what I'm after at all. I read somewhere they just re named what used to be Burton union
