A simple (and seemingly stupid) question for those using brass hose disconnects as I'm upgrading my hoses and thought I may as well upgrade to brass disconnects while I'm at it...

I assume you are just using a 1/2" to 3/4" converter/adaptor between ball valve and disconnect attachment?

Yip but im using 12mm lines chich are to big, if anything I would switch to 10mm and use barbed quick realease, and make them all 'Neta" made ones. The screw type ones havnt failed (yet) but you can see the angle of the hoses so there must be pressure on them and imagine them spraying 100deg wort all over you.
I had the same problem with my hoses. The thread on those is quite short and is hard to get done up over a 12mm id hose, I guess being designed for garden hose which has a thinner wall. 10 mm worked quite well but the backnut was prone to loosening. I think the Neta ones have a longer thread and hold a lot better, but were considerably more expensive
Thanks Mike, so you hoses are 12mm OD (like 1/2")?
Yip.
I'm using some nickel plated steel ones from HCD flow tech. But they're pretty shit and I'm looking to change them. I haven't had any real problems with them but they're getting some rust on them, must be crappy plating on them or something.

Brass garden hose fittings seem the go but I don't think they'll fit over my silicon hose, and I don't trust the screw clamp thingy on them - had them fail on the garden hoses too many times.

Stainless ones are pretty expensive last time I checked, like >$30 for a male female set. To fit the whole rig with them would be a wallet killer, but at least they'd last.
What size if your hose DG?

I was thinking of using polysulfone disconnect components like these:

Disconnects

US $13 each + hose tails etc. They are rated up to 137C, and although they do not specifically say food grade they are resistant to nearly everything!

Probably overkill.
I believe they are foodgrade, Morebeer sells them, and I think they have them as an option on their sculptures.

That price isn't too bad actually. Where ever I saw them last, probably MoreBeer, they were similar in price to SS.

I'm using the thick walled silicone. 12.7mm ID x 20mm OD.
Where did you source your thick-walled silicone hose from?

craftbrewer.com.au.

HCD Flow Tech over here have it also, might work out cheaper locally if you're not ordering anything else from Craftbrewer.

Priced in USD and they were very willing to ship to NZ. I had to negotiate it all over email and paid with PayPal as their web site did not like my NZ CC.

You could try somewhere that sells Skellerup products. i.e. RD1 or Farmlands or similar.

10mm id single air tube http://www.skellerup.co.nz/catalogue/dairy-nz/silicone-tubing obviously made to handle hot caustic washes and has to be food grade for the dairy industry

Found it here - quite a lot cheaper than the $100/m I remember HCD asking for when I last looked!
