I was in contact with these guys in China a while back : http://www.hsmachine.com/ . 630 USD for a 50 ltr cinical but they will only ship a minimum of 5 ata time so you'd need a few people in with you unless you want 5 all for yourself.
I know a few welders and asked for a quote for a bog standard 50 ltr fermenter and got quoted $600 and that is because he knows me and we doing a cheap quote. The expensive part is getting the cone rolled and the valve. What he planned to do was just buy a short piece of a wide diameter SS pipe, put a come and legs on one end and a lid on the other. A few hundred $$ doens't get you much nowadays!!
Needless to say I,m still using my plastic FV I got for free and making beer that is more than drinkable.
I've been happy with the ones I got from Farra.
One of the key features that I like is that I can easily cap my beer and carbonate it at the tail end of fermentation. With some beers this makes it possible to keg conditioned beer within 8-10 days of brewing. I've fitted some adjustable pressure relief valves to the valves on the lids and don't worry about blowing them up (I set the PRV to 1.1 bar /15 psi).
For very active fermentations I fit a blow-off hose to the lid instead of the PRV.
I got my conicals with a 152mm threaded opening for the lid so I could fit my arm inside to scrub away any deposits from fermentation.
Keg King in Melbourne have good priced S/S conical fermenters from 30L to 100L.
What exactly is bad about the welding, can you share some pics to show us what to look out for? I can't imagine a shop that deals with a fair amount of SS to not back purge or anything like that? Is there lack of fusion on the backside of the weld? I would think it to be near impossible for anyone to be able to weld on the inside of a vessel so small. What did Farra say about it?
Sorry about the 20 Qs, Cheers!
hi will try and get some photos over the week end
big dags of weld on the cone to body and gaps wear the fusion has not gone right though and black pits wear the legs have been welded on
i had the racking cane and the tri clamp fitting on the valve welded at crown in invers and the welds are so good
